Lucas Murgida
The Locksmithing Institute of CA53776V2.gallery, Lesson #15: Student as Authority, Gatekeeper, and Curator, 2022 - 2023

On June 4th, 2023, CA53776V2.gallery hosted the fifteenth lesson of The Locksmithing Institute, where Los Angeles-based artist Lucas Murgida offered tutorials on how to open the Ranger's locked doors from the outside. Upon successful completion of the course, participants were invited to leave behind a small piece of themselves, contributing to a group sculpture displayed in the gallery's main exhibition space.

Since February of 2005, The Locksmithing Institute has traveled to different public places and aimed to teach anyone interested concepts and skills related to locksmithing. Lessons have been taught all over the United States –and once in Uruguay– and have covered a wide range of practical skill sets such as how to pick locks and make keys while also covering theoretical analysis of the ideas embedded within locksmithing such as safety/security, entrance/egress, pressure/manipulation, access/agency, mobility/impedance, and confinement/freedom.
